I know croutons are technically just dried up toast cubes - technically. Is a salad really a salad without them, though? I'd argue no. These sourdough garlic croutons are the perfect use for bakery bread that has gone a little too past its prime. Perfectly seasoned with fresh garlic and olive oil, stale bread gets a new lease of life in these delicious, crunchy croutons.

Sourdough croutons in a bowl

Croutons are the perfect addition to any salad. I realized that there was so much lost potential in store-bought bagged croutons, of course after shovelling them in my mouth by the handful.

These croutons are the perfect addition to a caesar salad, with homemade caesar dressing, or a fresh avocado panzanella salad. Who would have thought dried up, crunchy bread would be so good and versatile?

Instructions

Instructions for preparing croutons

Start With...

Preheat the oven - Preheat the oven to 375°F.

Cube the bread - Cube the sourdough bread into bite-sized pieces. It is much easier to use a whole, unsliced loaf of bread. This will make bigger croutons, as opposed to thin sliced bread.

  1. Season the bread: In a large mixing bowl, add the cubed bread. Sprinkle with the dry seasoning, and toss well.
  2. Oil the bread: Add the olive oil and fresh garlic while tossing the bread in the bowl. Coat evenly.
  3. Bake the croutons: Spread the bread cubes on a baking sheet in one layer. Bake for 30 minutes, until the croutons are golden brown and are crisp.

Expert Tip

Use stale bread, when possible! Day old bread, or stale bread, is the perfect bread for croutons. It is inherently dry, which lends to a crunchy crouton that we all know and love!

Use a grater for the garlic! Using a grater or a microplane is a great way to make fresh garlic paste.

Substitutions

  • Sourdough bread - instead of sourdough, feel free to use any bread that you have on hand.
  • Olive oil - You can also substitute for avocado oil, or even melted butter!

Variations

  • Cheesy - Bake the croutons with some freshly grated parmesan cheese, for a cheesy twist!
  • Ranch - Throw in some packaged ranch seasoning, for delicious ranch-flavoured croutons!

Equipment

This is what I used to make this recipe - Please be mindful that different equipment and cooking utensils may yield varying results. Most of my favourite equipment can be found on my storefront.

  • Mixing bowl
  • Baking sheet
  • Grater

Storage

Store in an airtight container, in a cool area. I find that these taste best if used within a week.
