This Jose Cuervo margarita azul recipe is the perfect poolside cocktail recipe for the summer! Amp up a classic, traditional margarita with the sweetness and fruitiness of blue curaçao, giving this margarita its signature blue colour! Whether you like your margaritas frozen (like these frozen mangoritas) or shaken, you will want this one in your summer rotation regularly (possibly with sparkling rosé sangrias, and this Hawaiian Mai Tai Recipe too!)

Why This Recipe Works
Easily customizable! This recipe works well for both shaken or frozen margaritas, depending on your mood!
No specialty liqueurs needed! While we all do love specialty liqueurs and fancy cocktails, these margaritas are simple on the ingredients. The liqueurs are versatile, and you can use them in other drinks too!
Right balance of flavour! These margaritas are not overwhelmingly "boozy", and not too sweet either. They are perfectly balanced! If you like a good, balanced cocktail, you'll love a Baileys piña colada, too!
Ingredients
- Fresh lime juice: While it may be labour intensive, I highly suggest using freshly squeezed lime juice as a base for these margaritas. The flavour will be bright, citrusy, and refreshing.
- Jose cuervo tequila: I like to use gold tequila, as it tends to have a smoother, sweeter flavour to it.
- Triple sec liqueur: Triple sec is an orange liqueur. It adds another layer of citrus to the margarita.
- Blue curaçao: Blue curaçao is another citrus-derived liqueur, that is known for its iconic, bright colour. It is the key ingredient in this margarita azul recipe!

Instructions
Prep Work Before Cooking
Collecting all your ingredients - This will make cooking so much easier. Gather all the spices you will need, and keep them nearby.
Juice the limes - Juice the fresh limes by hand, or by using an electric citrus juicer, reemer, or a citrus reamer, or a handheld juicer.
Using one of the cut and juiced limes, rim the glasses with lime juice. Dip the glass, lime juice side down, into a plate filled with granulated sugar. Swish the glass around until the sugar has adhered to the glass. Repeat for the other glass, and set aside.
Add the ingredients to a shaker, with a scoop of ice. Shake for 30 seconds vigorously.
Fill the glasses with ice, and strain the margarita out of the shaker, into the glasses.
Expert Tip
To get the most juice out of your limes, microwave the whole limes for 15-30 seconds, depending on the power of your microwave. You can also roll the whole limes while applying pressure through your hand, to get the juices flowing!
Substitutions
- Gold tequila: If you prefer a punchier flavour, you can use silver tequila. Feel free to use any brand that you prefer.
- Triple sec: You can use cointreau, which is branded triple sec, or grand marnier as well! If you're want to go the homemade route, try this orange liqueur recipe.
- Fresh limes: If you are absolutely in a rush, or do not have any fresh limes, feel free to use sour mix or limeade.
Variations
- Frozen: Add the ingredients and a couple of scoops of ice to a blender, for a frozen version of this margarita.
- Classic: Omit the blue curaçao for a classic margarita recipe.
- Sweetened: If you prefer an even sweeter margarita, add in a squeeze of agave syrup, or simple syrup (made by simmering equal parts sugar and water).
Equipment
This is what I used to make this recipe - Please be mindful that different equipment and cooking utensils may yield varying results. Most of my favourite equipment can be found on my storefront.
- Boston shaker
- Citrus reamer
Recipe FAQs
Silver tequila is bottled straight from the distilling process, whereas gold tequila is aged in barrels for a period of time, before bottling. For this reason, silver tequila has a punchier flavour, and gold tequila is a little bit smoother and sweeter.
