Recipe Overview
- Flavour: The dressing for this coleslaw is the perfect balance of creamy, sweet and tangy. The sweetness and tanginess are not overpowering of each other, making for the perfect coleslaw dressing that goes with anything!
- Ease: If you can stir together a dressing in a mixing bowl, you can make this coleslaw! Pre-shredded coleslaw mix is my favourite shortcut, so you are not stuck shredding a big head of cabbage.
- Time: Five minutes is all you need. Optional resting time is up to you, but not required.
Ingredients
- Shredded coleslaw mix: There is no shame in taking store-bought shortcuts where they make sense. Pre-shredded coleslaw mix is the perfect mix of red and green cabbage, and carrots. It saves the trouble of purchasing two heads of cabbage, and thinly shredding each one. If you prefer, however, you can hand shred these with either a knife or a mandolin.
- Green onion: Green onions add the perfect onion flavour without pungent raw onions. I use both the whites and greens when I cook with green onions, as I think the flavour is great in both parts, and less wastage!
- Mayonnaise: Any recipe that is mayonnaise-based, I always recommend using a mayonnaise you really love. If you don't absolutely love the flavour of it, then you probably won't like the recipe as a whole. If you'd like to lighten this up, you can substitute half the mayonnaise with greek yogurt. For an extra tang, you can also use sour cream.
- Honey: Honey adds a sweet note, without being overwhelmingly sweet like some sugar-based dressings. A tip for measuring your honey is to spray the measuring cup or spoon with non-stick cooking spray, before measuring the honey. It will slide right out!
- Fresh lime: You will need both the lime zest and juice for this coleslaw. The easiest way to get the zest off of the lime is to zest it before you juice it.
- Spices and seasonings: You will need garlic and onion powder, and celery seed.
Instructions
- Mix the dressing together: Add the dressing ingredients to a mixing bowl, and stir well.
- Dress the coleslaw: Add the green onions to the cabbage mix, and top with the dressing.
- Mix and serve: Toss the coleslaw together, and serve! Enjoy!
Expert Tip
If you are making this earlier in the day mix together the dressing in a big mixing bowl, and pour the cabbage mix on top. Put in the refrigerator, and when you are ready to serve and eat, toss the coleslaw with the dressing. This will prevent soggy and watery coleslaw!
Recipe FAQs
You can substitute honey with regular sugar, or agave if you have it. If you are keeping this low carb, you can use a sugar replacement such as swerve.
Lemons and limes both have a great acidic flavour. Lemons are more sweet in nature, while limes have a distinct zing and bitter notes. You can definitely substitute lemons for limes, but the flavour of the coleslaw will be ever so slightly different.
This coleslaw is eaten best on the day of. You can, however, eat this up to 3 days later. Be mindful that the cabbage will let out a little bit of water, so it may not be as crisp. It will still be delicious!
Store this coleslaw in the refrigerator, in an airtight container.

What a great way to use this slaw, Kathleen! Happy to hear you enjoyed it.
Sharon
I had to substitute the onion powder and garlic powder with the salt versions. It was good. Since I use the bagged coleslaw and put out two servings each time, I mixed part of the dressing (what I needed for the servings) and used the rest of the dressing over a few days. I ran out of the dressing before the cabbage and I had to mix up some more dressing. This time I had all the right ingredients and wow, it was great! Thank you.

I am so happy to hear that, Sharon! I am a hardcore dressing girl myself, so I am guilty of making way more dressing than I'll ever need, haha!
